What would you do

A group of 45 Catholics and Protestants where murdered by King Mwanga between 1885-1887 in Buganda (know known as Uganda). Their crime was having faith. 22 were canonized in 1964.

As I sat in church yesterday while the African population took over the choir in remembrance of these people, I thought about my life and how easy it was to become lukewarm. Easy to sit on the fence and never let your beliefs be tested. Take the easy route out, keep shut, close your eyes, and turn your back.

I thought about Christians who preached love but were quick to condemn and accuse others of being evil. I remembered a program where some Christians refused to shake the hands of an HIV positive lady. I thought about integrity and how difficult it was to maintain yours in this day and age. Would you be able to stand up for your faith with a burning furnace waiting for you, the heat already burning the little hairs on you arms? Would you be able to stand up for what is right irrespective of the consequences? When faced with such a situation, would you stand up or would you run.

Thank God that most of us are not faced with such ghastly choices. These men were dismembered, beheaded, castrated, speared or burnt. In our daily lives we are faced with smaller choices that shouldn't be hard but they seem to be. It’s sometimes difficult to be honest…a white lie here or there seems easier. It’s difficult to have convictions that are different from others...its easier to laugh when a blasphemous joke is made or to join in on the gossip rather than walk away. It’s easier to turn a blind eye to injustice and a deaf ear to the cries of the helpless. Many think poverty is sad, not many try to help or make any contributions for the poor. Many pity orphans, not many would adopt. Some go as far as saying that the kids may have inherited evil blood. Of course I do not mean for everybody to adopt but if we any have convictions, then we should try and see that we do something, anything about them. Lets not sit and talk, and talk and talk...including me. Nigerians, we have the sit and talk syndrome.

Life is tough and is never black or white. Everyone is human. Not everyone can constantly abide by their convictions but a constant struggle to maintain your integrity is better than remaining lukewarm.

So I made a promise to myself to continue the struggle and to abide by my convictions. Lets not always take the easy way out.

You are so right... it's so easy to get on with our lives. When faced with horrible things that happen in this world, we are sad and wonder why life is the way it is... but before we know it, we are back to our normal routine.

Well written post.

Lovely post girl... it' so easy to bne a bystander and condemn what other people 'did' when one's reaction to that same thing has not been tested... It's a pity for the lives that were lost needlessly... Thanks for reminding us with this post... Good JOB!!

Gosh, definately food for thought. Standing up for hwt you believe.

In my town in chester, there is always this black guy, the same one that constantly preaches, I find his work remarkable, in that year in year out, day in day out, regardles of when you go into town, you will find him, sowing the seed, that is the word of God.

What stops me from joing him and asking him if he needs help, or would like something to drink. Is my smile and hellos more than enough, or trying to join in his music enough.

This post has kinda reminded me of what I should be doing, even when I think my help may not be needed.

Have a blessed week.

A very sober sounding post.. I feel you about that talking more than actually doing...it easy to talk...

That is so true...so i wish you all best, in stepping off the fence!

@LB, I know it so easy to get back to normal routine or to become jaded with it all. Its like seeing all those beggars is Lagos..sometimes you end up even being mad at them for getting in the way...
@pink satin, same here
@Nyemoni, yes half the things we sondemn other ppl for, its possible that we will end up doing given the same situation. Compassion is what is required not judgement.
@life of a stranger, yeah I tend to be shy for those who shout the gospel, because I'm not sure i could do it either... but we don't know how many peoples lives they touch.
@bimbylads, same here, its not for everyone but somehow I have a feelig I will end up working with them.
@yes refinedone, its a journey for life.
@Biodun, lol you weren't but I deleted your second one by mistake, I apologise...my blogger is not in english..so annoying!

When I first started reading your post I thought you were about to launch into a diatribe against non christians. I am glad to you have an educated and unbiased view about your faith.
For me it is much more about spirituality than religion. Religion, to me is a man made structure to the practice of faith and thus it has the shortcomings of man. Spirituality is the understanding and application of your relationship with God in your everyday life.
Great post and thanks for stopping by mine

PS
Taking a cue from Nyemoni

True true true, from the very start till the end of the post.

I remember being 2 shy to go out and preach the gospel with church members in naija(u know those winning souls for christ programmes). But i was always dressed up and ready for church at least i felt i was still serving God and evry1 goes 2 church. Basically going an extra mile was like an issue for me. I pray God gives us the courage to represent him in every aspect of our lives.

Like i remember a preacher saying "its either u'r with God or his opponent". That statement makes me feel so guilty!!

Persecution is never easy. Especially one of the religious nature....

We have to remember all of the sacrifices people have made just to insure that we are here. I am thankful to frst and foremost to God and for all my ancestors for their perserverance or else I wouldn't have been here....

When faced with all the ills of the world, I ask myself, what can I do to make it better? What am I willing to give up to help others. If I had to make a stand that could cost me my life, would my courage desert me? Tminx, you have asked a hard thing...

This feeling is not totally alien...best thing to do is to do as much you can.

We call ourselves Christian, just by name only but our actions don't show it. A lot of people have given up their lives just to make living as Christians today easy...All I can say, God truly come and renew our dropping Spirit...
I am not perfect...and as a Christian, I am still growing but I know God will strengthen us. It is hard to love someone day in and day out but God will fill us with the Holy Spirit so we can learn to love unconditionally…

TaureanMinx I want to thank you for reminding us to be humble and learn to put others before us.

God bless you.

Sometimes it's so convenient to take the easy way out, but as you wrote, one should have the faith to live by one's convictions.
He who has nothing he would die for, has nothing to live for.
